What’s Best for the Babies? Doctor to address nature of assisted reproduction
By Vicki Cessna
The current media storm about the California octuplets illustrate the country’s fascination with multiple births. But does the media portray the true reality of what the parents and babies face? Dr. Robin Pierruci, a neonatologist at Bronson and a parishioner at St. Monica’s, Kalamazoo doesn’t think so.
Dr. Pierruci will be discussing the issues surrounding assisted reproduction in a presentation on March 25: Echoes of Our choice: The Ramifications of Assisted Reproduction. Her presentation will cover three key areas: 1-The risks of prematurity; 2-what is an ethical reproductive doctor; and 3- the ethics and church teaching surrounding assisted reproduction.
“Being a doctor who takes care of premature babies, I have to tell the reality of what they face,” says Dr. Pierruci who also is working on a documentary with Fr. Mitch Pacwa for EWTN.
“I am not out to start a lynch mob against reproduction doctor’s,” she adds “Every child’s life is every bit as miraculous but there are important ethical questions to explore.”
Dr. Pierruci’s goal is to inform people about the true consequences of prematurity so they in turn can make more informed decisions. Additionally, in doing her research Dr. Robin explored church documents including Pope John Paul II encyclicals. “I was so delightfully surprised at how thoughtful and loving the language was.”
Pierruci as a neonatologist understands the dilemma couples face when confronted with the reality of failed fertility.
“By the time couples get to the point where they are exploring assisted reproduction many are not being told the real ramifications and also, because they are in a mourning period, they are not equipped to hear the information either.
“Through this presentation my goal is to safeguard future babies and the hearts of future parents.”
