What is FOCCUS?

FOCCUS is an internationally used inventory designed to provide engaged couples and those working with them a personalized profile of what is needed in their marriage preparation process.  It is both a starting place for couple discussion and a map of what issues need time and attention, affirmation or problem solving.

FOCCUS is:

  • a tool which utilizes156 basic questions plus additional questions for remarried, interfaith and/or cohabiting couples
  • not a test but the source of the REPORT which shows patterns of  strengths and challenges in categories for couples to review with a trained facilitator
  • user friendly and offers a broad range of facilitator training options and supporting materials
  • available in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Braille and on audio tape

Who facilitates FOCCUS?

This workshop will provide training for the prospective FOCCUS facilitator and refresh the skills of the seasoned facilitator.

The FOCCUS facilitator serves as neither a teacher nor a counselor, although individual facilitators may be skilled in both these areas. A facilitator’s role is to empower the couple to discuss the issues and move toward awareness and problem solving. The facilitator also helps couples identify and affirm their strengths. Referrals to educational programs and counseling are another component; some models of FOCCUS integrate these elements.

The Facilitator’s Manual provides training and materials.  It is a valuable resource which assists facilitators as they help couples identify patterns and issues.

While FOCCUS facilitators may chose to relate events of their lives in illustration of problem solving methods, their first objective is to listen and hear the stories each couple brings to share.  It is a gift to be able to model good listening and communication skills with our couples who are preparing to celebrate the sacrament of marriage.
