Bishops around the world are being asked to take a look at the situation of families in their dioceses and assess the effectiveness of pastoral teaching on marriage and family in preparation for the extraordinary Synod of Bishops on the family to be held in October 2014. The preparatory document ends with 38 questions seeking a response from bishops, religious orders and other Catholic groups. The survey may be viewed online here.

Beginning January 2014, the state health care exchange created by the Affordable Care Act will allow for taxpayer subsidies to contribute toward the purchasing of health insurance. Health plans on the exchange are currently permitted to include abortion as a covered benefit. As of December 2, a citizen-initiated measure (Initiated Legislation 1) is currently before the Michigan Senate and House of Representatives to prohibit taxpayer funded abortion on the new health care exchange. The proposal would require abortion coverage to be purchased as an optional rider for private health plans.
Michigan Catholic Conference urges you to contact your State Senator and State Representative to support and approve this initiative immediately. Click here to listen to a message from staff on the importance of your advocacy.
Earlier this year, the citizens of Michigan gathered signatures, sponsored by Right to Life of Michigan and supported by Michigan Catholic Conference, to bring abortion opt-out legislation before the State Senate and State House of Representatives. The No Taxes for Abortion Insurance Committee submitted 315,000 signatures to the Board of State Canvassers.
After the Board of State Canvassers certified the validity of the petition signatures on December 2, the Abortion Insurance Opt-Out Act now awaits consideration from the Michigan Legislature. Please send a message to your State Senator and State Representative today to ensure taxpayer funds are not used to pay for abortions.
