Regarding the individual catechist and teacher, the new National Directory for Catechesis reminds us:
Men and women from a wide variety of backgrounds are called to share in the Church’s catechetical mission . . . Programs of formation should be designed to help them acquire the knowledge and skills they need to hand on the faith to those entrusted to their care and assist them in living as disciples in Christ (55, A).
The “Diocese of Kalamazoo School and Parish Catechist Certification Standards” found here are intended to be a significant part of how we ensure the proper and consistent formation of our catechists. In order for all our catechists and teachers to authentically witness to the faith which they teach, they themselves need to be constantly nourished and strengthened in their knowledge and understanding of the Catholic faith, their teaching methodology, and their personal spirituality.
