




The first official Mission in this corner of Michigan was on the shore of Lake Michigan -- in the settlement of St. Joseph -- in 1690. It was named the parish of St. Joseph in 1720. (more)

The story of the Catholic Church in Kalamazoo – indeed in Southwestern Michigan – centers in the mother church, St. Augustine. It is probable that early missionaries knew the locality even before the founding of the village in 1829. The Pottawatamie Indians were among the first of the Indian converts. (more)
